Community resources help extend VAVS services and program potential. Unlike other medical center services, VAVS relies almost entirely on donated support to carry out its purpose: to provide supplemental assistance to the VA and its patients. If you would like to support this program, all monetary & material donations should be submitted through the Volunteer Office Program Manager. Please contact us with questions.

Donations:
Services and programs for patients and family members are enhanced entirely through donations received through VA Voluntary Service. This includes programs for our homeless, indigent, and low-income veterans and their families. Your donations also support our awards and reccognition program for our 220 + volunteers who provide valuable time and service in support of our veterans and our health care system.
Your donations are processed through the Voluntary Service and used for the purposes as desired by the donor. If you are interested in making a monetary or material donation, please ensure your donations are submitted through the Voluntary Office program manager. Monetary Donations
Monetary donations enhance VA Voluntary Service programs. Following are some of the accounts to which donations may be made.

General Purpose – Provides means of support for programs or activities that assist in accomplishing the goal of “Putting Veterans First.”

Coffee – For supplies in support of all patient coffee programs.

Canteen Books – to purchase canteen books used for patient needs and special programs.
-
Christmas – Used for Christmas gifts and activities for patients.
Donations may also be made to support various Recreation Therapy Service activities, SCI Unit activities, and support for the out-based clinics.
Donations may be made for any of the above purposes by individuals or organizations. Please do not send cash. Make checks or money orders payable to: NMVAHCS.
Other Donations

Men’s Clothing – New and used shirts, denim pants, coats, jackets, gloves, scarves, tennis shoes, hiking boots, and hats accepted. Used clothing needs to be clean and in good condition.

Socks and Underwear – Only NEW socks and underwear will be accepted.

Reading Materials – Paperback books, Western, science fiction, autobiographies preferred; and magazines, no older than three months.

Games, Playing Cards, Puzzle Books, Puzzles. New or used if in good condition.

Telephone Calling Cards – For patient use.

Coffee Supplies – coffee, condiments, cups, etc.

Personal Comfort Items – Toothpaste, toothbrushes, shampoo, shaving cream, lotion, powder, combs, etc. All items, such as mouthwash, must be alcohol free. Razors should not be included in individual kits, but can be accepted in bulk.

Lap Robes – Used for the comfort of patients.

Miscellaneous Items – Nail clippers, emery boards, small mirrors, brushes, sewing kits, etc.

West Texas VA Health Care System - Big Spring, TX
Donations / Needs List:
The West Texas VA Health Care System operates a 40-bed nursing home care unit as well as maintaining an average daily census of approximately 20 inpatients. An intensive outpatient Substance Abuse Treatment Program maintains approximately 10 lodgers. All in and outpatients depend upon the Voluntary Program for amenities, calling cards, house shoes, canteen books, etc. Because of the remote area, calling cards are always needed. Additional needs include comfort items, canteen books, small tote bags, socks, tee shirts.
