Volunteer Opportunities
The following is a list of ongoing volunteer positions available at AVAHCS. This list does not encompass all volunteer opportunities at the Medical Center.
- DAV Transportation Service Driver - DAV driver travels within the city limits and surrounding area picking up qualified patients at their homes and takes them to the VA hospital for their medical appointments. They must have a valid Texas drivers license, proof of insurance, and pass a VA physical exam and pass a driving skills test with the VA Police Service before they are eligible to drive.
- Escort Runner - Escort patients in wheel chairs to designated areas. Deliver lab specimens, patient charts and records.
- Shuttle Driver - Drive shuttle within Medical Center grounds. Transport patients and family members. Must have valid TX drivers license, proof of auto insurance and pass VA courtesy physical exam and driving skills test.
- Clerical - Assist with general clerical work, typing, filing, collating, reception, and call patients to remind them of their appointments.
- Recreation - Transport patients to activities. Assist with food preparation and serving patients. Participate in activities (bowling, bingo, cards, etc.).

Phoenix VA Health Care System - Phoenix, AZ
Volunteer Opportunities
The following is a list of volunteer positions available in Phoenix. This is only a partial list and does not include all opportunities available.
- Guest Services – Escorts patients in wheelchairs or gurneys to designated areas within the medical center. They deliver lab specimens, patient charts and records. Guest Services volunteers also serve as shuttle bus drivers throughout the campus, both inside and outside, picking up veteran patients, family members, visitors and employees from outlying parking lots and transporting them to the main medical center building and the Ambulatory Care Clinic addition.
- Escort Dispatch – receive requests to transport patients, charts and lab specimens.
- Clerical – assists staff members with general clerical work to include answering phones, filing, typing and reception of veteran patients and visitors.
- Recreation – transports patients to activities both on and off campus such as bowling alleys, Diamondbacks baseball games, fishing etc. Assists in the preparation of food and serving patients.
- Information Desk – provides directions to various areas within the medical center and is available for general information.

Volunteer Opportunities:
Volunteers perform very vital functions to ensure that our veterans enjoy their visit to our facility. Some of the positions available are:
- Appointment Ambassador - Call patients to remind them of upcoming appointments
- Administrative Clerk - Volunteers assist staff members with answering phones and general clerical work such as filing, typing and reception of veteran patients and visitors.
- Diabetes Education Ambassador - Assist the Diabetes Educator with the program.
- Drivers for DAV Transportation Network - Transport veterans to and from their VA appointments.
- Escort Ambassador - greet visitors, provide information/directions, check out wheelchairs, escort veterans by wheelchair to appointment.
- Mobile Book Cart - Our volunteers deliver books, magazines and newspapers.
- Patient Ambassador - check-in patients at different medical clinics
- Refreshment Servers - serve refreshments to veterans
- Records Room - File, find/retrieve/deliver medical records to clinics
- Pharmacy Staff Support - Label and package prescriptions for mailout
- Shuttle Cart Driver- Our volunteers provide shuttle cart service to the front entrance of the facility from the parking areas.

Volunteer Opportunities
The following is a list of ongoing volunteer positions available at NAVAHCS. This list does not encompass all volunteer opportunities at the Medical Center.
• Escort Runner - Escort patients in wheel chairs and on gurneys to designated areas. Deliver lab specimens, patient charts and records.
• Shuttle Driver - Drive shuttle within Medical Center grounds. Transport patients and family members. Must have valid AZ drivers license and be trained on the use of the shuttle.
• Clerical - Assist with general clerical work, typing, filing, collating, and reception.
• Recreation - Transport patients to activities. Participate in recreational sports activities assisting veterans (bingo games, card games etc. ).
• Hospice Volunteer - Provide support to the veteran and their family who are in the inpatient Hospice Program.
• Veterans History Project Volunteer - Assist with the interviewing, transcribing and video taping of veterans stories for the Library of Congress
• Information Desk - Provide Medical Center information and directions to patients and visitors.
• Comfort Cart - Deliver “welcome Kits”, comfort items (toiletries, books, stationary, flowers, etc) to patient's bedside.
NAVAHCS Volunteer Orientations are held every Wednesday in the
Theater Building #15, 500 Highway 89, Prescott, Arizona.

Craft Cart - Visits patients with craft cart, offering craft kits to hospitalized patients.

- Appointment Reminder Assistant - Call patients to remind them about scheduled appointments and track responses.
- Mail Clerk - Assist with mail delivery throughout the hospital.
- Book Cart - Visit patients in their rooms offering a selection of books and magazines.

West Texas VA Health Care System - Big Spring, TX
Volunteer Opportunities
Many volunteer opportunities exist at the West Texas VA Health Care System. Clerical support, Memorial Lady volunteers, popcorn sales, courtesy cart drivers, and DAV drivers are among the “most recruited” list. Other volunteer assignments needed include information booth attendants, recreation assistants, Ambassadors, ICU Waiting Room, musical entertainers, and escort volunteers for the afternoons. During the summer, youth volunteers are always needed. Big Spring initiated a VA Cadette/Cadet Program for young volunteers interested in pursuing a nursing career.
